Erika Marquardt presents "Memories of a Cancer to Come"

On Friday Sept 15th at 7pm, well-known local artist and author Erika Marquardt will discuss her latest book Memories of a Cancer to Come at a book launch and celebration at Jabberwocky.

Erika began a series of drawings and paintings in her signature style upon receiving a diagnosis of cancer.  Collected and annotated with her poetry, they form a raw, poignant and powerful look at one woman's journey through the wastelands of cancer.  Anyone who has survived this dreadful disease, or has loved someone who battled it, will be touched by this book.  Hope, anguish, bitterness, joy --it's all here in her stark and powerful paintings.

Erika was born in Berlin, Germany where she spent her childhood years during the war.  When she was 23 she moved to the U.S.  She is self-taught and has exhibited in New England, New York, and Europe.

Her first book was  "Memories of a War To Come, about which Gregory Maguire, author of "Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" (which became the hit broadway play) says: "The artwork is raw and accomplished at once, the stuff of real life.  The poetry seems to complement the strength of the artwork beautifully by being a bit more formal in some ways, a bit reticent in others. It is hard for me to imagine how this good hard work will be welcomed to the world.  I hope fulsomely as it is welcomed here!  I am honored to have a copy."
